🔗 Part 1 of 4: C1 Linking Words (1–5)

1. Although – (Contrast)

➡ Used when two things are true at the same time, but they contrast.

Examples:

  1. Although I was sick, I went to the lesson.
  2. Although she studied hard, she didn’t pass the test.
  3. Although it’s late, I will continue studying.
  4. Although he is rich, he lives simply.
  5. Although they disagreed, they remained friends.

2. Nevertheless – (Strong Contrast)

➡ Used to introduce a surprising opposite idea. Like “but anyway”.

Examples:

  1. I was tired. Nevertheless, I helped my son with homework.
  2. The plan was risky. Nevertheless, they tried it.
  3. It rained. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the picnic.
  4. He didn’t prepare. Nevertheless, he passed.
  5. I disagreed. Nevertheless, I respected her opinion.

3. In order to – (Purpose)

➡ Means “for the purpose of”. Usually followed by a verb.

Examples:

  1. I wake up early in order to pray Fajr.
  2. She studied late in order to finish the project.
  3. We moved to Cairo in order to learn Arabic.
  4. He left early in order to catch the bus.
  5. I ask questions in order to understand deeply.

4. As a result – (Consequence)

➡ Shows the outcome or effect of something.

Examples:

  1. I didn’t sleep well. As a result, I was tired all day.
  2. He broke the law. As a result, he was fined.
  3. We worked hard. As a result, we succeeded.
  4. They ignored advice. As a result, they failed.
  5. She studied daily. As a result, her English improved fast.

5. On the other hand – (Comparison / Contrast)

➡ Shows the opposite point of view or another option.

Examples:

  1. Learning online is flexible. On the other hand, it needs discipline.
  2. He’s strict. On the other hand, he’s fair.
  3. Arabic is difficult. On the other hand, it’s very beautiful.
  4. Books are great. On the other hand, videos are faster to understand.
  5. Some kids like grammar. On the other hand, others like stories.
